Privacy Policy

WiFi Survey collects nothing about you. There is no account, no analytics, and no server to send anything to.

The short version

Everything the app measures stays on your iPhone. Every packet it sends is addressed to your own router and never leaves your local network. There is no backend service behind this app, so there is no place for your data to go even if we wanted it.

What the app collects

Nothing is collected in the sense the term normally means — no data is transmitted off your device. The app does create and store data locally so it can show you a report:

  • Measurements. Packet loss, latency, TCP error counts, throughput and radio mode, sampled once per second during a recording.
  • Network identity. The name (SSID) and access point identifier (BSSID) of the Wi-Fi network you are measuring, plus its security type, so the report can attribute parts of your walk to individual access points.
  • Spot names. The labels you type yourself, such as "kitchen" or "desk".

All of it is written to the app's own storage on your device and stays there until you delete it.

Location permission

The app requests Location While Using the App. This is not because it wants your location. iOS refuses to reveal the name of the connected Wi-Fi network to any app that does not hold location permission, and the network name is what lets the report tell one access point from another.

Your coordinates are never requested, never recorded, and never transmitted. If you decline the permission the rest of the app still works — the report simply cannot label the network.

Local network permission

The app requests permission to communicate with devices on your local network. It uses this to send ICMP echo requests and open short-lived TCP connections to your router, which is how the measurement is taken. It does not scan for, enumerate, or connect to any other device on your network.

What is never done

  • No data is uploaded to us or anyone else.
  • No analytics, telemetry, crash reporting or advertising SDKs are embedded in the app.
  • No accounts, sign-ins or identifiers are created.
  • Nothing is sold, shared, or used for advertising or tracking, as defined by Apple's App Tracking Transparency framework. The app does not request tracking permission because it does not track.
  • No third-party service processes your data, because the app contacts no third-party service.

Your control over the data

Because the data never leaves your device, you hold all of it. Delete an individual recording from the History tab, or delete the app to remove every recording along with it. There is nothing held elsewhere for you to request, correct, or have erased — but if you would like that confirmed in writing, ask and it will be confirmed.

Children

The app is not directed at children and collects no personal information from anyone, regardless of age.

Changes to this policy

If the app ever changes in a way that affects this policy, the policy will be updated here and the date at the top will change. Given the design of the app, a change that introduces data collection would also be described in the release notes.
